Lampião and Maria Bonita

They are legendary lovers in Brazil. Through the years artists, musicians and theatre makers have portrayed them as a courageous loving couple of good taste. They lived in the beginning of the last century and headed a group of about 35 robbers, the “Cangaço”, who attacked large sugar and coffee plantations in the northern tropical parts of Brazil. They were known as fashionable, as they always wore beautiful stolen clothes and jewellery, and caring, as they only stole from the rich, but always paid the poors for their services, be it for shelter, food or fresh horses.

The owners of the plantations and the local authorities tried to capture them for years. The gang never stayed at one place more than one night and were constantly on the move. The poor always helped them. Only after 18 years, on July 28th 1938, did the police manage to surprise them during their sleep. The fight lasted only 15 minutes, where after they were all dead, including Lampião and Maria Bonita.

The robbers were dead, but a legend was born!
